The captain is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ship, including its seaworthiness, safety and security, navigation, crew management, and legal compliance, and for the persons and cargo on board.

  • Maintain boats and equipment on board, such as engines, winches, navigational systems, fire extinguishers, and life preservers.
  • Measure depths of water, using depth-measuring equipment.
  • Read gauges to verify sufficient levels of hydraulic fluid, air pressure, and oxygen.
  • Inspect vessels to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessels and equipment, and conformance to regulations.
  • Steer and operate vessels, using radios, depth finders, radars, lights, and buoys.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 10+ years experience as a licensed captain
  • A USCG 50 to 100 ton inland master's license

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, hands to feel; reach with hands and arms, climb, stoop, kneel and crouch as needed. The employee frequently is required to walk; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, ability to adjust focus, and distance vision.

The position is outdoors; and is exposed to hot, humid and/or cold conditions at times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The staff member will work in a high traffic/high volume business environment and will be required to spend a majority of their time on their feet.
